RE: Comment about ‘Fractionating Human Intelligence’. Non-existent flaws in the original article and their relation to limitations of the P-FIT model

Article history: Received 17 March 2014 Received in revised form 5 May 2014 Accepted 8 May 2014 Available online xxxx In this invited response, we first note that contrary to the claims of Haier and colleagues, they were not part of the review process for the article Fractionating Human Intelligence. We then expand on the rationale underlying the primary objective of the study, to determine whether the axes of individual differences in cognitive ability reflect the manner in which the human brain is organised into intrinsic functional networks, and contrast the resultant advance with the more limited aims and methods of the P-FIT model. We address the primary objection of Haier and colleagues by demonstrating that the unrotated model is not only a poorly defined psychological construct, but also neurobiologically implausible in the context of the fMRI data. Finally, we discuss how the distinct strengths of behavioural and neuroimaging data may best be combined in order to refine a model that captures the intrinsic architecture of human cognitive abilities. © 2014 Elsevier Inc. Providers and Patients Caught Between Standardization and Individualization: Individualized Standardization as a Solution; Comment on “(Re) Making the Procrustean Bed? Standardization and Customization as Competing Logics in Healthcare”
In their 2017 article, Mannion and Exworthy provide a thoughtful and theory-based analysis of two parallel trends in modern healthcare systems and their competing and conflicting logics: standardization and customization. This commentary further discusses the challenge of treatment decision-making in times of evidence-based medicine (EBM), shared decision-making and personalized medicine. From ...
متن کاملToward Customized Care; Comment on “(Re) Making the Procrustean Bed? Standardization and Customization as Competing Logics in Healthcare”
Patients want their personal needs to be taken into account. Accordingly, the management of care has long involved some degree of personalization. In recent times, patients’ wishes have become more pressing in a moving context. As the population ages, the number of patients requiring sophisticated combinations of longterm care is rising. Moreover, we are witnessing previously unvoiced demands, ...
متن کاملBest of Both Worlds; Comment on “(Re) Making the Procrustean Bed? Standardization and Customization as Competing Logics in Healthcare”
This article builds on Mannion and Exworthy’s account of the tensions between standardization and customization within health services to explore why these tensions exist. It highlights the limitations of explanations which root them in an expression of managerialism versus professionalism and suggests that each logic is embedded in a set of ontological, epistemological and moral commitments wh...
متن کاملMistaking the Map for the Territory: What Society Does With Medicine; Comment on “Medicalisation and Overdiagnosis: What Society Does to Medicine”
Van Dijk et al describe how society’s influence on medicine drives both medicalisation and overdiagnosis, and allege that a major political and ethical concern regarding our increasingly interpreting the world through a biomedical lens is that it serves to individualise and depoliticize social problems. I argue that for medicalisation to serve this purpose, it would have to exclude the possibil...

Many articles over the last two decades have enumerated barriers to and facilitators for evidence use in health systems. Bowen et al’s article “Response to Experience of Health Leadership in Partnering with University-Based Researchers: A Call to ‘Re-imagine Research’” furthers the debate by focusing on an under-explored research area (health system design and health service organization) with ...
